Alex Stoddard was born in Jacksonville, Florida and spent his childhood growing up in the deep south. He began taking self-portraits at the age of 16. This stirred him to create and express himself through the craft of photography. The first part of his photos focuses on the human form and the process of infusing it with natural surroundings. The second part of his photos creates whimsical and surreal portraits.
2. Style: (5 sentences. What visual characteristics does this artist’s work possess? If you can compare it to a painting or art history style please do.)
His main focus is on the human form. He tries to make both of the ideas fit together and make them seem like they were apart of each other already. Another main focus of his is creating surreal photos. These photos are creating a chill down your spine type of look. These photos are conducted of the human form outside of reality.
3. Philosophy: (5 sentences. What were the major ideas behind this artist’s work? Where they personal, political, social, etc. What were they trying to “say” with their photographs?)
His photos are both participatory while also being dark self-violation.

I am in love with surreal and dark self-violation type photos. I love how he creates an atmosphere that is horrific and having a sense of illusion as well. His photos inspire me to make my own surreal type photos. Every time I see one of his photos, I keep wanting to find more and try to do make it on my own. His photos are unique and odd but in a good way.
